A tragedy has befallen Westfield High School. Our beloved Dr. Mcguire, aka Stacy Mac, has been moved to an alternative position in our school district. No, not moved--forced. Stacy Mac was forced out of her position as principal, and there is more to this situation than meets the eye.
On Sunday (June 7th), the school board had a meeting, at which they held a clandestine vote on whether to move Stacy Mac to a newly created position as “director of alternative learning” or something. With a 3-2 majority, they decided that this change would happen. The public didn’t even know the vote was happening, and they just went ahead and voted! What happened to transparency? Why does the school board suddenly so strongly resemble the corrupt political organizations that we are working to dismantle? Don’t they even care about what the parents and students of the district have to say?
I know what you’re probably thinking: we are living in a time of fear and unrest, so this really isn’t the most pressing issue at the moment. But the time we live in is precisely why we need Stacy Mac to remain in her position, doing the job that she loves.
First of all, Dr. Mcguire is an encourager. I cannot imagine WHS without Stacy Mac; they just go together! She is an incredibly positive, loving, and passionate human being. I have not gotten to know her as well as some of my peers, but every time I spoke to her during my high school career, she was filled with joy and energy. Whenever she came over the intercom to make a speech or announcement, she always ended it with “Just in case you haven’t heard it today, I love you.” That might seem so simple, but to some people, that could turn a terrible day around. It fills me with emotion to think of how that might impact someone else’s life. It certainly made me smile. And that’s what makes her so perfect as our principal! She genuinely cares about her students and their well-being, and she tries to do whatever it takes to support our school as a whole as well as individuals.
Stacy Mac has also managed a lot of different challenges throughout her career. Only in the past two years, she has overseen a massive construction project to expand the school as well as dealt with two very unconventional graduation ceremonies. She has kept the school as organized and smooth-running as possible during the construction, and she has gracefully handled the reactions of parents and students to upsetting and disheartening decisions related to graduation. In short, she gets a whole lotta crap that she doesn’t deserve, but she takes it in stride because she loves what she does.
Between all the disasters and emotional turmoil 2020 has brought and the ongoing school expansion, we need something consistent in the school environment. Consistency will help students feel safer and more secure, even if everything else in the world is out of whack. And who better to provide that than Stacy Mac? She has served as the WHS principal for many years, and she has supported thousands of students. I think everyone needs a little love and encouragement from the likes of Dr. Mcguire right now.
And of course this all happens a year before her contract ends, so putting Dr. Mcguire in this new position will conveniently make it easier for the school board to force her out of the district completely. Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I believe that there was some tension between Dr. Mcguire and Dr. Grate, and wasn’t it the school board that made the final call on graduation this year…? :o
Think about it. Teachers are risking their jobs by speaking out and trying to get Stacy Mac back. This is not something we can take lightly. There’s something else going on, and we must demand to know what it is, or, at the very least, why the school board chose to do what they did.
