Five years after I initially read the Twilight series, I got to explore Edward’s perspective in Midnight Sun.
Obviously, the book is a new take on Twilight: same story, different POV. But I was unbelievably excited when I found out this book was coming out at last. Since we all know the story (yes, even the haters), I won’t review it point by point. I just want to talk about a few of my favorite parts.
I really loved to hear about what happened in between the big moments from the original story. I am here for learning where the heck Edward disappeared to when he ran off for like a week! I am here for getting all the details on Bella and Edward’s bonding conversations in the beginning of their friendship (um, Bella and I have the same favorite Narnia book [Voyage of the Dawn Treader] and Disney movie [Beauty and the Beast], and I just now learned this)! I am here for reading the precise details of how Alice faked the scene of Bella’s fall! I! Am! Here! For! It! I also really enjoyed the vampire baseball scene as told by an actual vampire and getting to learn more about Edward’s relationship with each of his adopted siblings. Curiously enough, at this point in the story, he likes Jacob. Of course, the two have never spoken, and he doesn’t view Jacob as a legitimate romantic rival, but it’s still funny to me how pleasant and refreshing Edward finds Jacob’s mind in comparison to the others he encounters.
Another great thing to come out of this book was the memes. For one thing, it takes place in 2005, which was an interesting time in itself, and Stephenie Meyer has had 15 years since writing the original Twilight to hear from fans and ponder her writing choices, so she definitely tried to cover up the fact that Bella wore a khaki skirt to meet the Cullens by having Edward ignore that detail. On top of that, Edward is so dramatic. His thoughts often run in circles, and he sounds like a depressed poet whose work you’d read in English class. So the way that he colors his worldview makes for some interesting meme content (his suggestion that the Quileutes could post a billboard about his family being vampires? I’m still dying over that).
The whole Twilight renaissance going on right now around this book is great. People are investigating the content and delving into the characters, giving attention to those epic background characters who deserve their own stories. Speaking of which, I learned from the internet this week that Stephenie Meyer has ideas for two more books in the works. No idea what they’re about though. Personally, I’m hoping for more about any of the other Cullens. But who knows? I guess we’ll be in the dark until the dawn breaks. That’s all from me until I take a bite of my next book. ;P
