What Can We See When We Look Into Another's Eyes?

Do blue eyes become bluer when they cry?

Does melancholy well up in their depths and overwhelm them?

And even so, can they also light up with the touch of a smile, like a clear blue sky?

Are green eyes capable of looking upon another without jealousy?

Is it within their nature to turn rotten, like a leaf in the bitter cold?

Or do they reflect the brightness and growth of a blossoming flower on its brilliant green stem?

Can brown eyes blaze brighter and hotter in anger?

Do they glow with the fire of a thousand hot coals?

Or do they remain calm, cool, and soft no matter what, like the gentle earth nourishing a seed?

Do gray eyes cloak the feelings of the one who possesses them?

Can you watch thunderous clouds roll over them to hide the storm that brews inside?

If they do bring rain, isn’t it a cool, soft rain that refreshes the soul and restores peace to it?

And isn’t there a beauty to everything in life that requires but a second glance?

Note: This is my fourth entry for the America Library of Poetry's annual student poetry contest (from senior year). It will be published in their yearly anthology in December.
